- Teabags and coffee grounds
- Tissues and paper towels
- Pet manures and compostable kitty litter
- Lawn clippings
- Garden prunings (including weeds and rose trimmings)
- Twigs and branches under 100mm in diameter
Caddy liners are available free of charge from Council's Customer Service and Visitor Information Centres. Caddy liners can also be collected from Wonthaggi Transfer Station, Grantville Transfer Station and Inverloch Transfer Station - please note that caddy liners are not available from Cowes Recycling Bank. Customers can collect caddy liners from the temporary Customer Service Centre in Cowes - located within the Phillip Island Nature Parks office located at 154-156 Thompson Avenue.
Alternatively, newspapers can be used to line your kitchen caddy, or you can put food waste straight into your Organics Bin - there is no requirement for food waste to be wrapped or bagged.
Some local supermarkets do stock a range of compostable bags, these are not accepted in kerbside Organics Bins unless they are the same bright green colour and carry the Australian standard code AS4736.
The Organics bin was introduced because food and garden waste made up the majority - up to 61 per cent - of the average household’s garbage bin waste. By collecting food and garden waste, we are diverting kitchen organics from landfill while also giving people a disposal option for garden waste. This means less waste will go to landfill, extending the life of our current landfill, all while reducing greenhouse gases and leachate into the environment.
To put it simply - yes. The Organics bin is universal across all properties that receive the kerbside collection service to ensure this service is delivered at minimal cost to the whole community. By applying the program across all kerbside services, we also ensure we maximise the amount of waste diverted from landfill.
