One of the most common questions asked of our Waste Services team is “but where does my waste actually end up?”
- Yellow lidded bin – recyclable waste
Here in Bass Coast we aim to recycle as much waste as we possibly can to reduce the amount of waste that must be sent to landfill. Paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, aluminium cans, rigid plastic containers, steel cans and empty aerosols can all be recycled through Council’s kerbside collection service.
Council’s kerbside collection contractor, Wonthaggi Recyclers, collects your yellow lidded bin and the contents are taken to Visy’s Recycling Material Recovery Facility in Springvale. Any contamination that is delivered with the recyclables is sent to landfill. The sorted recyclables are either used in Visy's packaging business or sold locally or internationally for further processing.
- Green lidded bin – food and garden waste
Collecting food and garden waste for recycling helps reduce the amount of waste that must be sent to landfill and significantly reduces emissions generated by Council’s landfill. Food and garden waste (including weeds) can be recycled through Council’s kerbside collection service.
Council’s kerbside collection contractor, Wonthaggi Recyclers, collects your green lidded bin and the contents are taken to Cleanaway’s South East Organics Facility in in Dandenong. The food and garden organics are then decontaminated, shredded and sent to a composter for recycling into a nutrient rich soil.
- Red lidded bin – residual waste
Every single item that you place in your red lidded bin is collected by Council’s kerbside collection contractor, Wonthaggi Recyclers, and delivered straight to Council’s landfill in Grantville. This waste is buried in customised cells that are managed in accordance with strict EPA conditions.
- E-waste and batteries
E-waste is banned from Victorian landfills under state regulations. E-waste cannot be disposed of in any of your kerbside bins, and should be taken to one of Council’s waste facilities for recycling.
Batteries must never be disposed of in any of Council’s kerbside bins – batteries are the most common source of fires at material recovery facilities. All batteries should be taken to one of Council’s waste facilities for recycling (or some supermarkets offer a battery collection recycling service).
E-waste and batteries recycled through Council’s waste facilities are sent to a number of different processors for recycling where they are sorted, dismantled and separated into core materials and components before going through specific recycling and recovery processes.
Please contact Council's Waste Education Officer on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) if you would like hard copies of these documents (most are available as stickers) or if you have any other Waste Education queries.
