Council appointed Strzelecki Engineering Pty. Ltd. to undertake bridge renewal works of the existing timber trestle bridge over Bourne Creek, Kilcunda. The Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge is an iconic former rail bridge located approximately 500 meters east of Kilcunda.

This project was identified as part of Council's Bridge Renewal Program and is part of our 2017/18 and 2018/19 Capital Works Programs. The work will ensure the Bourne Creek Bridge remains as a landmark feature of the region and will continue to provide a pedestrian and bicycle link on the Bass Coast Rail Trail well into the future.

The works involved:

  • manufacture and fabrication of all new elements off-site.
  • replacement of the upper decking including handrails. The decking substructure has been replaced with stainless steel members and components to accommodate new fibre composite decking panels. The handrails have been replaced with new marine grade stainless steel
  • modifying and strengthening the bridge abutments.

During the initial construction works, the bridge was closed during to Rail Trail users. With the bridge now open, we would like to thank the community and rail trail users for their patience during this time.

These works were fully funded by Council in the order of $867,000.
