Road Safety
In partnership with Department of Transport, Victoria Police and other key road safety agencies, the Bass Coast Community Road Safety Strategy was developed.
The key goals in the strategy:
- Safer cycling
- Safer schools
- Safer pedestrians
- Safer drivers
The Strategy adopts the Safe System approach.
If you are travelling or holidaying in Bass Coast Shire, stay informed and be prepared. For further information visit our Visit Bass Coast website.
More Information:
Safety Around Schools is a priority and we remind community members and parents about the School Zone speed limits around schools.
Most school zones in Victoria have a speed limit of 40km/h between the hours of 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm. Drivers are reminded that when approaching school crossings, they should slow down to 40km/hr or less. You must stop in front of the first white line and not allow any part of your vehicle to enter the school crossing when pedestrians are crossing or when the 'Stop' sign is displayed by the Crossing Supervisor and wait until the Supervisor or pedestrians are completely clear of the crossing before proceeding.
The 40km/h speed limit is clearly sign posted around school areas and you must ensure you obey the speed limit during school terms.
The 40km/h speed limit does not apply to school zones in school holidays or on weekends.
Our Community Safety Officers and Victoria Police monitor school crossings and driver behaviour around schools, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.
Please remember it is an offence to:
Double park by stopping next to a legally parked vehicle - even for a short time or to drop off or pick up passengers.
Stop or park across a driveway, footpath or dividing strip except when picking up or dropping off passengers.
Stop or park within 10 metres of an intersection
Stop or park across or in a bus zone.
