Box Hill Hawks to host historic double-header in Wonthaggi
The Box Hill Hawks and Bass Coast Shire Council are excited to announce that the Hawks will host a Victorian Football League (VFL) and Victorian Football League Women's (VFLW) double-header at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve on Sunday 30 April against the Casey Demons.
Entry to both games is free, with the VFLW commencing at 11:30 am and the VFL kicking off at 2:05 pm.
Both matches are expected to be exciting contests, with both Box Hill and Casey coming off 2022 finals berths in the VFL and VFLW.
The entertainment won’t just be on-field though, with a range of activations around the ground set to make the day a memorable one for all.
The announcement comes off the back of the AFL confirming the Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW Round 1 fixtures, with both Box Hill teams set to commence their season on Sunday 26 March.
Box Hill Hawks General Manager Pat Clancey said this double-header highlights the strength of the Hawks’ partnership with the Bass Coast Shire Council.
“We’re really excited to give the Wonthaggi and wider Bass Coast community a great taste of Hawks VFL and VFLW football on Sunday 30 April,” Clancey said.
“Both Box Hill and the Bass Coast Shire Council share a committed vision to promote Australian Rules football in the region and in particular women’s participation, which is why games like this are so important to stage.
“Having just come off a successful pre-season camp in Wonthaggi and Phillip Island, both teams are looking forward to a big turn-out from the Bass Coast’s footy-loving locals at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve on Sunday 30 April.”
Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor Councillor Michael Whelan also expressed his excitement for the double-header.
“As Victoria's fastest growing regional community this is not only an important recognition for Bass Coast but reflects our deep commitment to gender equality, inclusion and diversity,” Cr Whelan said.
