This year, I decided to take part in ‘STEPtember’ as part of the Bass Coast Shire Team. It felt like a really good time to get a bit more active and push myself to take at least 10,000 steps a day, as well as a good opportunity for a bit of team building and healthy competition within the organisation. There are so many amazing trails and places to walk, run or ride in Bass Coast and surrounding areas and it is well known that exercising outdoors can do wonders for our mental wellbeing, as well as our physical health. I am proud to say that I was able to rack up over 350,000 steps during the month – with the whole Team managing to take more than 9.5 million steps – an absolutely incredible effort. More importantly, our Team raised nearly $4000 for Cerebral Palsy. The challenge now is to keep it up!

It is good to see that Bass Coast’s COVID-19 vaccination rates continue to increase, with more than 90 per cent of eligible people over 15 having received their first dose, and just over 60 per cent of our eligible population is now fully vaccinated. It is really heartening to see our community is doing everything it can to help Victoria reach its target of 80 per cent of people being fully vaccinated, which will see restrictions eased substantially and will potentially make lockdowns a thing of the past.

Bass Coast has been selected to participate in the State Government’s Vaccinated Economy Trial. The Trial will run from 11 October for two weeks and will form an important step to help our State open up once again. Up to three ‘test sites’ will be identified in Bass Coast by peak industry bodies to take part in the Trial and could include hospitality, beauty, hairdressing or tourism businesses, or events. The Trial will allow a higher number of fully vaccinated people to attend the selected sites, in order to test the verification of patron vaccination status.

As the weather gets warmer, we are reminded that summer is on the way, which means that the Fire Danger Period is also likely be announced in coming months. To help Bass Coast residents get ready for summer, our fee-free green waste disposal period will be on again this year, from Saturday, 30 October until Sunday, 21 November. During this period, you can dispose of green waste, with some exceptions, at our waste facilities at no charge. For more information, visit www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/greenwaste.
