Mayor's Message
Cr Michael Whelan

It was wonderful to attend the official opening of the new kindergarten building at the Phillip Island Early Learning Centre last Tuesday. Member for Bass, Jordan Crugnale MP had the honour of performing the opening. The new building was funded by Department of Education and Training Building Blocks grant program, with a contribution from the Cowes Primary School. Council contributed $70,000 towards the playground. The kindergarten building will open from Term 1 next year, with around 143 children enrolled to attend 3-year-old and 4-year-old kindergarten at the Centre in 2022.

Deputy Mayor Cr Leticia Laing had the pleasure of starting the main race of the AMX MX Open at the Dandenong Motorcycle Club’s Wonthaggi track recently. Council is a proud partner to this event which provides a significant boost to the Wonthaggi economy with more than 1,000 people in attendance across the weekend. Congratulations to Yarrive Konsky from the Dandenong Motorcycle Club and sponsors in delivering a successful day of motocross racing, which pioneered Council’s decision to require event organisers to provide equal prize money for men and women when holding professional sporting competitions in our Shire.

I had the pleasure of attending the 2021 Westpac Gippsland Wine Show awards celebration recently, held at Phillip Island Winery’s stunning new function venue, The Atrium. Council has been a long-time supporter of these awards and this year sponsored the Most Successful Exhibitor award. We sponsor the awards in recognition of the important role wineries play in the visitor experience and the economic value of the industry. Congratulations to Purple Hen Wines who collected an unprecedented five of the six major trophies and awards in the blind judging, including Most Successful Exhibitor and Best Wine of Show. A big congratulations to all of the other winners announced on the night as well.

I’d also like to take a moment to acknowledge Phillip Island Winery’s recently launched function venue - The Atrium. This incredible facility will play an important role for delivering amazing events in Bass Coast, and as an added benefit was designed by local architectural design company Orchard Design and manufactured by Amber Creek Sawmill (Fish Creek).
