Mayor's Message
Cr Brett Tessari

An exciting Bass Coast project I want to talk about this week is a visiting pod that will soon be installed near the entrance of Kirrak House in Wonthaggi. This incredible project will help people visit with their loved ones in Bass Coast Health’s (BCH) aged care facilities. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, BCH closed its nursing homes to visitors, due to the vulnerability of residents. While residents of Kirrak House and Armitage House have stayed in contact with their relatives and friends via phone and video they would all love to see each other in person.

The visiting pod is an innovative solution that responds to the persistent risk of community transmission. The new pod will enable ‘in person’ interaction, without compromising the safety measures BCH has put in place to date. A clear screen will be built into the middle of the pod with an intercom system. Residents will enter from one side of the pod with a nurse and relatives will enter from the other side. They will be able to see and hear each other and move around their independent spaces. This wonderful initiative is sure to bring joy to all involved and I would like to say a huge ‘thanks’ to all of the local businesses that didn’t hesitate to come on board and help make the idea into reality.

Unfortunately, not everything can be good news and I was saddened to learn last week that the 2021 Bass Summer Agricultural Show has been cancelled – 101 years after the show was abandoned in 1919 due to the Spanish Influenza outbreak. I know it must have been a difficult decision for the committee to make, but I am positive the show will be able to return bigger and better than ever in January 2022.

As we head into the election period, this is my last Mayor’s Message for the term. I would like to thank the community for their support during my last two years as Mayor, as well as my two Deputies, Cr Bruce Kent and Cr Geoff Ellis. I am hopeful that I’ll be able to continue representing the community I love following the October election.
