Keeping school leavers safe in Bass Coast

Friday 15 November 2019

Young people from across Victoria will make their way to Phillip Island to celebrate the end of Year 12 later this month.

The official School Leavers Week runs from 23 November to 30 November.

Bass Coast Shire Council is participating in the statewide campaign, Good Times Great Breaks, which aims to ensure School Leavers Week is a positive experience for young people, their families and the broader community.

Council is working together with Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, local businesses and volunteer agencies to help young people have a great time and stay safe.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, explained that every year, young people flock to coastal towns like Phillip Island to celebrate School Leavers Week.

“For many teenagers, this might be their first time away from home, so it’s important we do our bit to welcome them and ensure they have a safe and memorable experience in Bass Coast,” Cr Tessari said.

Schoolies are encouraged to plan accommodation ahead of time and register online with Registration provides access to a range of support and ‘freebies’, such as transport, bottled water, discounted meals and information on local attractions.

“The registration also helps Council, police and emergency services to adequately resource the community,” Cr Tessari said.

Throughout the week, Council will provide more garbage bins on the Cowes foreshore, as well as additional street and toilet cleaning. Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria will have extra resources on location as well.

Red Frogs and DanceWize will also be at the forefront of School Leavers Week on Phillip Island. These voluntary organisations provide outreach support to young people through peer education and support services, such as free transport, barbecues and cooked breakfasts. DanceWize is a program of Harm Reduction Victoria and utilises peer education to reduce drug and alcohol related harm.

Registered School Leavers will also receive regular safety messages via their mobile phones.

We encourage residents to contact Council if they have any concerns relating to School Leavers Week on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.
