Gippsland Stands United for Bushfire Response

Gippsland Stands United for Bushfire Response

Tuesday 21 January 2020

The Gippsland Local Government Network (GLGN) has pledged its commitment to work collaboratively to rebuild Gippsland communities, and drive investment, and sustainable growth for the Gippsland region.

GLGN Chair, Cr Brett Tessari, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council explained the importance of the alliance in the aftermath of the tragic bushfire season so far.

“We will achieve more working together than we could ever hope to working alone,” Cr Tessari said.

“This is the philosophy that underpins GLGN and the work that we do. Together, we build a collective vision and agreed agenda which guides our advocacy and decision making processes.”

GLGN is an alliance of the six local government authorities that make up Gippsland: Bass Coast, Baw Baw, East Gippsland, Latrobe City Council, South Gippsland and Wellington. This is the GLGN pledge:

We acknowledge that the fire season has a long way to go, and it will take some time for us to fully comprehend the true extent of damages caused.

In the midst of and following the tragic bushfire season, there will be both challenges and opportunities. As an alliance, it will be integral that we collectively identify and prioritise our largest areas of needs and highest areas of risk. We must work together to make the most of these opportunities and use shared resources and collective intelligence to problem solve.

We are committed to hearing our community, seeking their feedback, and representing their needs.

We will support each other, listen and take the time to understand the full extent of the bushfire impacts. By doing this we will be able to best share existing resources, advocate and leverage funding commitments.

We promise to lead our communities, to empower and encourage in the face of adversity, and to embrace the hard work ahead knowing that in the end we will rebuild a community strengthened and enriched by resilience and determination.
