Walktober over, but students keep walking

6 November 2009

During Walktober students across Bass Coast Shire got active and walked to school.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Lisa Archibald, said it was great to have such high participation in Walktober.

“Wonthaggi Primary School’s grade 3/4 class had a fantastic participation rate with 85 per cent of students walking on Wednesday throughout the month of Walktober,” said Ms Archibald.

“Students who couldn’t walk all the way to school walked around the school oval to make up the distance."

“To celebrate their success the class enjoyed a healthy breakfast at Over to Kate’s."

“Wonthaggi Primary School and Council would like to thank Murray Goulbourn and Wonthaggi Coles Supermarket for donating produce vouchers towards the breakfast,” said Ms Archibald.

Wonthaggi Primary School Health and Physical Education teacher, Will Rankin, said there was plenty of healthy rivalry between classes to be the most active.

“We’re encouraging this as a lifestyle change for the students and their families,” said Mr Rankin.  “The aim of this program and programs like it is to increase the health and wellbeing of students for the long term.”
