A survey of local businesses and consumers shows a strong interest in extended shopping hours in Wonthaggi.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Business Development Officer, Margaret Murray, said the surveying was undertaken as part of the first stage of the Business Expansion and Retention (BEAR) program.
“The surveying was completed by a steering committee which included Cr Duscher, representatives from the Wonthaggi Business Association, Chisholm Tafe, local businesses and volunteers,” said Ms Murray.
“Shoppers and businesses were asked a range of questions aimed at identifying what they want and need. Both were clearly interested in investigating an increase in trading hours."
“The survey also showed that businesses believed they need to work collaboratively with other businesses to make joint plans to extend trading hours over the coming summer months,” continued Ms Murray.
Local businesses also expected a 55.3 per cent increase in staff numbers over the next twelve months to three years.
“This shows that our local businesses are looking to the future with a positive attitude which is good for local employment and of course our local economy,” said Ms Murray.
The first stage of the BEAR program will shortly come to an end when survey results and report are handed over to Wonthaggi businesses.
These will identify opportunities for the expansion and retention of local businesses.
All businesses are invited to a presentation of the survey results on Monday, 9 November at 6pm at the Wonthaggi Workmans Club.
