Waste Management

Domestic Kerbside Waste & Recycling Collection

Council provides a 120 litre wheelie bin for household garbage and a 240 litre recycling bin to residents who receive a garbage service.  Garbage is collected weekly and recycling fortnightly. From Christmas through to the end of January recycling bins will be emptied weekly. For a list of items you can place in your recycling bin, visit our Domestic Recycling page.

Bins must remain at a property even if you move elsewhere.

How do I organise bins to be delivered if I don't have any?

Call our Customer Service staff on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) to arrange for a garbage and/or recycling bin to be delivered.  Delivery can take up to ten business days.

What to do if your bin is stolen or damaged?

Call us on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) to arrange for a replacement. The first time your garbage or recycling bin is stolen or damaged Council will replace it free of charge. On other occasions a charge may apply.

What day are bins in my town emptied?

The shire is divided into two collection areas called Zone 1 and Zone 2 so you will need to know what zone you live in (see the table below) to find out your collection day. A calendar with a full schedule is mailed out to properties every June, but they can also be picked up from Council Customer Service Centres or download from the link below. For collection days in your area refer to the Zone 1 (PDF 160kb) or Zone 2 (PDF 159kb) Calendar.

Additional information about the garbage collection service

Council uses a driver-only vehicle with a mechanical pick-up arm to empty your bins.  This means the positioning of your bin is important to ensure the collection runs efficiently and to minimise the risk of your bin being missed.

Bins must:

  • be placed near the kerb with the wheels facing the property
  • not be placed too close to trees (including overhanging branches) or light poles
  • not be placed behind parked cars
  • be placed at least 50 cm clear of other bins
  • be placed out for collection the evening before your scheduled collection day
  • be removed from the kerbside as soon as possible after garbage is collected to avoid the bin being stolen or damaged
When putting garbage in your bin it is important to make sure that:
  • all garbage placed in your bin is wrapped or in plastic bags
  • only normal household garbage is placed in bin
  • your bin is not overloaded and the lid is fully closed
  • garbage is not forced into the bin as it may jam in the bin and not be emptied
  • bins are cleaned regularly
The following materials must not be put in your household garbage or recycling bins:
  • hot ashes
  • oil
  • paint
  • chemical or solvents
  • liquids
  • syringes
  • timber or building material
  • gas bottles or trade waste
  • hard large items (can damage the compaction equipment on the truck)
  • unbagged loose items like dust and leaves that can blow away
