When should I call the State Emergency Service (SES)?
If you or your property is affected by a flood or storm.
What number should I call?
Call 132 500 from anywhere in Victoria, for the cost of a local call. Calls from mobile phones may be higher.
What happens when I dial 132 500?
Landline calls are automatically diverted to the local SES Unit or an emergency communications centre, where a trained call-taker will note the details and dispatch the local SES Unit to the incident. People phoning from a mobile phone might be required to identify the State they are calling from before their call is directed to the local SES Unit or an emergency communications centre.
Why can't I call SES on 000?
Triple zero is used nationally for police, fire and ambulance. SES is not covered by triple zero nationally as different states and territories have differing needs, so there is not a consistent requirement for this service. The SES in Victoria has established its own state-wide number.
What assistance does the SES provide?
Temporary emergency assistance to help people protect themselves and their property from further damage in circumstances such as:
- Trees down on a building
- Damaged roofs
- Rising flood water
- General building damage
- Trees down and blocking access
- Any storm damage that may be a threat to life or property
The role of the SES volunteer team is to make the scene safe. It is the property owner's responsibility to arrange for the removal of debris and permanent repairs to their property.
What If a tree has fallen on my fence or in my backyard?
If the tree is not blocking access and there is no threat of further damage, it is the property owner's responsibility to arrange for the removal of the tree and permanent repairs.
Blocked drains - whose responsibility?
If blocked drains or down pipes are causing damage to your property or threatening to cause further damage, the SES will assist with making the scene safe. It is the property owner's responsibility to organise permanent repairs or maintenance.
What happens if my or someone else's life is in danger during a flood or storm?
Always dial triple zero (000) for police, fire or ambulance in a life-threatening emergency.
What is the cost of the SES service?
There is no cost for SES assistance and all their volunteers are trained to national standards. The SES is a community-based organisation meaning that the volunteers are locals with local knowledge and are aware of the critical rescue requirements of your area.
What do I do now?
Update your list of emergency phone numbers and write 132 500 down somewhere that's easily accessible during a flood or storm.
How do I contact my local SES unit with a general enquiry?
You can contact an SES Unit with a general query on their non-emergency phone number. The contact details for local SES Units is contained within our
Community Directory.
How can I volunteer?
SES Units are always on the look out for new volunteers. If you would like to learn more about the SES visit their
