Emergency Management
Your Emergency Kit
During or after an emergency such as flood, fire or storm, you will need a number of items to help you. By creating an Emergency Kit you will have everything you need should you need to evacuated or if you lose power for a long period of time.
What should you include in your kit?
- A portable radio
- A torch
- Spare batteries suitable for both radio and torch
- A spare battery (fully charged) for your mobile phone
- Candles and waterproof matches
- Sufficient stocks of tinned (non perishable) food and fresh water. Replace these items on a regular basis to make sure they are not stale.
- A first aid kit and basic first aid knowledge or instructions.
- Good supplies of essential prescription medication. Replace these items on a regular basis to make sure they have not expired.
- Strong shoes and rubber gloves.
- A waterproof bag for clothing and valuables (including a copy of your insurance details!).
- A list of emergency contact numbers and numbers of friends and relatives.
- Sandbag - if it is a flood emergency it is very important that you place a sandbag in the toilet bowl to prevent back-flow of sewage into your home. Do this whether you stay or leave the property.
Set all this up in a plastic tub and keep it in a cupboard or other place which you all can access quickly.
Make sure everyone in your family is aware of its location.
