Four Year 10 students from Wonthaggi Secondary College are gaining valuable experience at Bass Coast Shire Council.

Corporate Services Director, Danny Luna, said students Dean Williams, Jacqueline Wheeler, Nick Kellow and Steven Scott were enjoying their placement.

“As part of their work experience program the students are helping in IT, Engineering and Finance,” explained Mr Luna.

“We move the students around the organisation so they are able to gain some realistic experience and knowledge in different areas of Council and to keep things interesting for them.”

Working with IT manager, Brian Olden, Nick Kellow really enjoyed helping out the team.

“It’s really interesting work.  So far I have got to do an audit of computers and help with the photocopier,” said Nick

“You never know what to expect next.”

Jacqueline Wheeler experienced working with Accountant, Darren Williams.

“It’s great to see how the Finance Department works and how many different aspects there are to it”, explained Jacqueline.

Steven Scott and Dean Williams were gaining insight into Local Government working in and outside the office.

“I thoroughly enjoyed going out on site to check out the different projects going on around the Shire,” said Steven.

Dean said that he got to work on some really interesting projects such as the South Dudley Special Charge Scheme, the Hunter Street renovations and the Anderson boat ramp upgrade.

“I also helped with looking at pipe and service lines in properties, drafting drainage plans and inspecting job sites,” said Dean.

Council endeavours to place work experience students whenever possible.  For more information about work experience at
