Roundabout and Roadworks in Wonthaggi Finished
19 April 2010
Traffic is now flowing with the completion of works at Wonthaggi’s Graham Street/South Dudley Road intersection and West Area Road and Webb Road.
The intersection roundabout and other roadworks were finished on 19 March, in time for the Wonthaggi Centenary Celebrations parade.
- Roadworks on the new roundabout included improved drainage
- Footpaths within West Area Road, outside the hospital and along to Coalfields Caravan Park were upgraded and the existing footpath into Guide Park moved, placing pedestrians further from the new roundabout
- The pedestrian refuge and the bus stop area opposite Rose Lodge were also upgraded
- New street lighting was installed, including putting the existing overhead power lines underground
- The Webb and West Area roads have been widened and sealed
All works were carried out within the specified time frame of four months. Access to Wonthaggi Hospital was maintained throughout the construction period.
Bass Coast Shire Council Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, explained: “These roadworks were constructed to lessen the impact of our road network with the increased road traffic in and around the Wonthaggi as part of the desalination project.
“I would like to thank the public for their patience while the roadworks were being carried out. I also thank the contractors and service authorities who put in a huge effort to finish the work before Wonthaggi’s Centenary parade.”
Council arranged this project through its capital works program. The cost of roundabout project will be reimbursed by the State Government, as part of the $12 million commitment it made to road improvements around the desalination plant.
The roundabout project was awarded to Sure Construction Pty Ltd for the tendered price of $1.2 million.
