Bass Coast Young Leaders Awards

Bass Coast Young Leaders logo

Each year schools in Bass Coast select two students from both Year 6 and Year 11 to be the recipients of the Young Leaders Award. In 2017 a VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) category was introduced to recognise young people studying in alternative learning settings.

The Award recognises students who display qualities in one or more of the following areas:

  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Friendship
  • Team work
  • Leadership
  • Academic excellence
  • Sporting excellence
  • Outstanding improvement
  • Arts and culture

As part of the Young Leaders program, students participate in a Leadership Workshop and Lunch with the Mayor. This provides an excellent opportunity for the Young Leaders to get to know Councillors, learn more about how to contribute to Council decision making and build relationships with students across Bass Coast.

As part of the program, students also participate in a filmed interview aimed at exploring and defining leadership. This year the Young Leaders were asked who they look up to as role models and why.

Students, their families and school principals, are also invited to attend a special presentation to receive their award from the Mayor. The presentation was at the Inverloch RACV Resort.

Chloe is in year 12 at Wonthaggi Secondary College and wants to study Vet Nursing next year. Chloe said that she can fast-track her career by completing Year 12 VCAL, instead of VCE. As part of this program Chloe has to undertake a weekly work placement, which she loves. ‘I get to work hands-on with animals and learn how the business runs’, says Chloe.Chloe is in year 12 at Wonthaggi Secondary College and wants to study Vet Nursing next year.
