Camping on Private & Public Land

Camping in the Shire must be at designated camping grounds or caravan parks. If you wish to camp anywhere else you must have a permit.

Can I camp on my own land?

You can, however a permit may be required for camping on vacant land.

How do I apply for a permit?

Fill out a Local Laws general application form (PDF 397kb).

If you are applying to camp on private land you must comply with the following:

  • The owner’s name, street name and number in letters not less than 75mm high must be displayed at the street boundary of the property.
  • The owner must provide proper sanitation, bathing and drainage facilities including running water to the site to the satisfaction of Council.
  • The site must be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition at all times. This also includes adequate rubbish/recycling bins stored without causing a nuisance and ensuring they are emptied on collection days.
  • At the termination of the permit, all caravans, tents, etc. must be removed from the property.
  • The permit will be displayed in a prominent position on site during the term of the permit.
  • No caravan, tent, toilet, rubbish/recycling bin or other structure is situated on a site lesser in area than 60sq metres or 24 metres from any road or reserve boundary or 2 metres from any side street or property boundary.

A General Permit fee of $100.00 plus a fee of $10.00 per week for camping is applicable and must be paid before a permit will be issued.

Please note Council's General Local Law No.1 of 2005 prohibits camping on Council land or in a public place or on private land without a permit. If you camp without a permit you may incur a penalty fine of $250.
