The Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre is Bass Coast's major entertainment venue, catering for cinema, live performance and community events.  Cinema and Fine Film is programmed throughout the year in line with the Centre's annual schedule.

Major renewal project:

The much loved Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre is undergoing a major refurbishment project in 2018. The project has been funded as part of Council's 2017/2018 Renewal Budget.

Council has awarded contracts for the following aspects of the project:

  • Seating (removal and installation) - Hadley Australia
  • Building Works (access, fire safety, refurbishment) - TS Constructions
  • Technical Systems (lighting and sound) - HME Services

Project Update 5 January 2018:

Seat Removal WUCAC

The Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre major renewal project has started with the first of many contractors making use of the quiet period between Christmas and New Year to remove the 35 year old seating from within the auditorium.

Hadley Australia, who has removed the seats, will again be on site nearing the completion of the project to install the brand new seating as selected by the community.

Local builders, TS Constructions are now on site and have commenced the building works including bathroom renovations and orchestra pit structural improvements. Following this,  the installation of an access lift to the second tier of seating into the auditorium and the upgrade to the fire services will start.

IT industry experts, HME Services, will soon be on site to start all technical work. This will include  a full revamp of the lighting and sound throughout the Centre.

Cinema Update:

Council manages all film activities at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre.This includes mainstream screenings throughout holiday periods and fine films, which are scheduled throughout the year. It is expected that all screenings will be programmed to re-commence in mid 2018. Screening of films at the Centre is promoted via an independent page (

Business Case Update:

Identified as a key action within the Arts and Culture Plan 2015-2019, Council has commenced the planning for the future management of the Centre. Council has engaged theatre experts Artefact Consulting to research and benchmark against 'like' facilities and present various options for the future management of the Centre. These will be shared with the community and presented to Council in 2018.
