National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing individualised support for eligible people with permanent and significant disability, their families and carers.

The NDIS provides a flexible, whole-of-life approach to the support needed by people with a disability, to pursue their goals and aspirations and participate in daily life.

The NDIS will available in Bass Coast from 1 October 2017. For more information please visit the NDIS website or phone 1800 800 110.

Council’s Role in Supporting People with a Disability

All Councils have a key role in supporting the NDIS and to increase participation of people with a disability in the community.

At Bass Coast Shire Council, the Disability Action Plan 2016 - 2020 guides Council actions and planning to improve opportunities for access and inclusion to those who live, work, study in, or visit Bass Coast.

For information regarding Bass Coast Shire Council’s Disability Action Plan please contact the Community Development team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.

Changes to Ageing and Disability Services

Introduction of the NDIS will change access to home and community care services currently provided by Bass Coast Shire Council.  Council is committed to working closely with our participants to ensure a smooth transition to the NDIS, and support is available to assist through this transition period.

Participants under 65 years who are currently using these Council services can contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) now to determine if they are eligible for services and support under the NDIS.

Current Council home and community care services will remain in place until the participant has been assessed as eligible for the NDIS and their individual support plan is developed and approved. All the disability services and support a participant is using (including those from Council) will need to be included in their NDIS support plan, and will be delivered by an authorised NDIS service provider.

Participants under 65 years who are deemed not eligible for services and supports under NDIS will continue to receive services from Council under the Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC PYP).

For further information regarding Council’s Home and Community Care services, please contact the Aged and Disability team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211.

For information regarding the NDIS please phone 1800 800110 or visit the NDIS website the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)
